I think we all knew a new one was on the horizon, but B&N has finally announced the new nook!

I think it's kind of ugly. :/ It looks like a lot of other things that are available out there right now. Not that the look of the thing should matter, I'm just a bit disappointed because the "1st edition" nook is so damn sleek and pretty, I figured the second installment would be along a similar vein.

Also, apparently this one is also wifi only like the nook color. I didn't know until today that the nook color didn't have a 3G version, so that was news to me.

And the good stuff:

-They got rid of the color screen.
:( I love my pretty little color, but I can respect this decision. I know it's the screen that causes the original nook to have a "poor battery life" at least compared to other ereaders. (I've had my nook for a year now and have never had a battery problem. YMMV)

-It's EINK!
I was getting tired of seeing the nook color only updates. I know, I know. They are probably going to release a "nook color 2" next year and there more then likely won't be any updates to the original nook (the only update I want is cover support for sideloaded books - which I doubt they will ever do), but I like that they will actually be focusing on promoting eink products.

-They are doing some sort of nook social network?! I'd love to see how this works and I REALLY hope they extend it to the original nook and nook color.

Your thoughts?

I agree with you on the looks. It looks more like a tablet and less an e-reader... And it's dark and just kind of like everything else. But the new features are pretty cool! I love the full e-ink screen.

I work at B&N and can't wait to play around with this one! =)

But like you, I have the very original Nook, with 3G+wifi. I love mine and have never had any problems with it, but man this new one is pretty cool.

I honestly still like the original nook the best.

Me too. ;)

I'm not impressed with the new one. I don't want to have to put my fingers all over the reading screen. Also, I use 3G to get books. I'm afraid that the lack of any 3G support on the new Nook is going to mean that it will go away entirely. That will be inconvenient for me. The social network aspect is not at all a selling factor for me. I already don't have enough time to read as it is, but I know that people may really like it.

If I invest in a new e-reader, I won't be choosing the new Nook. I love my original Nook. I have no intentions of getting anything new though. However, if 3G goes away totally for the original Nook, I will most likely move on to a Kindle. I don't particularly want to, but when I need a book at midnight and I have no internet service at home, I want to be able to get my book!

I'm slightly confused as to why they even got rid of 3G in the first place.

I'm sure it's a matter of cost for Barnes and Noble. They don't want to pay to support our 3G usage. Saves them money and we can go find a WiFi hot spot if we don't have wi-fi at home. I'm trying not to get upset about it, but the writing is on the wall...I will miss the convenience of it. Of course, I live in the stone ages and don't have Wi-fi at home. That's also why I paid more for the Nook with 3G. I'll enjoy it while it lasts and then go from there.

I guess I can understand not making the new products with 3G. The nook color has more then proved people are willing to buy a wifi thing when there is no 3G available.

It would just really bug me if they got rid of it completely.
People paid extra for it. Either by purchasing before there was a wifi only option or by choosing the 3G version. It should just remain available.

Yeah, I really hope they keep the 3G as well. I know that I paid extra for it for a reason. They very well may keep it. I mean, since they aren't including it with new products, it's not like the usage is going to increase. The things we can use the 3G for are limited (shopping and downloading our books), so they may keep it for the customers that do use it, but not expand it for new products. I'm NOT running out to get a Kindle today. I'll just wait and see. I just like to be prepared for the possibility. When things change, I pretty much resort to, "What does this mean for MEEEEEEEEEE?" mode. So, I think I know what it could mean for me. I just don't want it to come to that as I love my Nook so much and if I wanted a Kindle, I would have chosen that to begin with. Until BN announces that we are losing the 3G coverage, it's business as usual. They must know that their customers that rely on the 3G to shop will go to Amazon if they get rid of it. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I think it's a little bit thinner, more expensive and heavier then Kobo's http://www.kobobooks.com/touch_tech

But I don't like eink.. I love Nook color, it's absolutely comfortable for me to read, browse etc, and I can't get used to the flickering of the eink screen. And touchable eink - it means more winking. Long battery, that's good of course.. but for me it's more easy to recharge

I think nook social network is already exist, for nook color (you can add friends/see friend's lendme etc)

I think the Kobo one looks better. o_O

I'm the opposite with the screens. The backlit screens really hurt my eyes and give me major headaches so it's eink or nothing for me. I won't be getting this one though.

Hmmm, I didn't know that (social network). I was hoping it would be something along the lines of goodreads, but just with B&N and have the possibility to access it through the nook, but also on the computer. Of course, that makes it a bit redundant.

I will never catch up!

Me neither. :P I just really want them to continue support for the original nook (it's not even two years old!) and eink support.

Ewww. Ugly.

I love my original Nook. Are there ever going to be any more updates? I loved it when they made the page-turning faster, and gave us the shelves.

Lol, that first sentence is exactly what I thought when I first saw it!

I don't know if there will be any new updates for it or not. :(

At first I was put off by the squarishness, but looking at it again, I really find myself liking it more and more. It's going to fit in my purse. I hardly ever use the 3G or wifi in my original nook. I think I've used the mp3 player once. I'll be waiting to see it in person in the stores, but I'm pretty sure I'll be getting one for my birthday and passing my original nook to my husband. :>

I love my original nook, although I was pissed because a month later they released the wifi-only nook. -_- The only thing that sucks about touch screens with an e-ink reader is that the screen becomes.. more opaque or something, but I have a feeling I'd get used to it.

Not too sure what I think about social networking with reading. Goodreads, yes, nook and Kobo social networking.. eh.
